Cablecast and Microsoft OS EOL

January 5, 2021

If you are not aware, after January 14, 2020, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or support for PCs running Windows 7 & Windows Server 2008 R2.

This means your system (on a operating system level) could potentially be vulnerable without Microsoft patching it. However, as a software company, we are not discontinuing updates to these operating systems when it comes to our Cablecast software and CG Bulletin-board software. We will continue to release updates for Windows 7 and Server 2008 based hardware.

How can I keep my Windows 7 and/or Server 2008 system secure?

Common security practices for your system should be enough to keep it secure. Things including, but not limited to:

  • Keeping Windows firewall enabled
  • Not using your server as a workstation
  • Using Windows Defender anti-virus*
  • Not running unfamiliar software

This, of course, is not a totally inclusive list. For a complete list of suggested security actions on your server, we recommend reading Best Practices For System Security.

*See "Best practices" KB for more details about running Anti-virus on your broadcast server.

Can I just install Windows 10 on my hardware?

We do not recommend installing a operating system update to your system. Your hardware was shipped with specific driver support and configuration to run its best on the operating system it came with from production. Installing a newer OS on a system intended for a older one could result in instability, incompatible software and other unintended side effects. Our support team would also not be able to reliability support your hardware if its running a different operating system than what we'd expect it to be running.

Best suggested path is using what you have now until you are ready to purchase and replace your hardware with current generation hardware, which is running the latest Microsoft operating systems.
