Update VIO 1RU Chassis to Active Heatsink/New Fan Configuration

January 18, 2024

1. Power down and unplug the unit/Remove from Rack so you can open the chassis and comfortable work on the server. There are several screws, 1 on each side of the unit that should be removed and a 3rd screw on the top. There is a 4th screw on the back of the server that needs to be loosened (but not removed) in order to open the chassis. You can then slide back and lift the chassis cover off.

2. Loosen the 4 screws holding down the passive heatsink, once they have been loosened (they will not remove fully) you can carefully lift the passive heatsink off the CPU and place it aside.

3. Clean up any remaining thermal paste residue on the CPU with a small amount of rubbing alcohol and a paper towel. The Active Fan Heatsink should have new Thermal paste pre-applied where it will contact the CPU.

4. Carefully line up the active heatsink into place on the CPU with the exhaust fan facing the back of the server over the motherboard I/O ports (Ethernet/USB etc). Be sure to hand tighten the 4 screws into the motherboard so it is secure. Do not over-tighten the heatsink onto the CPU.

5. Remove fans 1,3,4 and 5 by lifting them straight out and disconnecting the attached power cables/extensions. The 2 remaining chassis fans should be in line with the Video I/O card and memory sticks.

6. Connect the chassis fan power cables to FAN A/B headers and connect the CPU power cable to the FAN1 header.

7. Reassemble the chassis and reconnect the unit to power on and confirm the fans are working as expected.

8. Launch a Command Prompt as an Administrator and run C:\trms\services\CablecastMonitor\Tools\IPMICFG-Win.exe -sdr.

It should return RPM info for the connected fans like below.
