Cablecast 7+ Update Guide

January 4, 2021

Cablecast systems with a VIO still have a multiple server classification; which determine what features are selected when running the installer.

This guide will run you through the process of updating your Cablecast 7.x.x system.

Overview

The engineering team at Cablecast are always working hard at bringing new features to Cablecast, as well as squashing pesky bugs. Therefore from time to time you will need to update the software installed on your system. This guide will show you how.

To perform a Cablecast update will need to go through the following steps:

  1. Review your system to determine what equipment needs updating.
  2. Request a download link from Cablecast support.
  3. Download and run the installer.
  4. Confirm system functionality.

Determining What Equipment needs updating

The First step when updating your system is generating a list of machines that need updating. There are two classes of servers that make up your Cablecast automation system: Primary/Host server, and Cablecast Servers.

The type of server and the role it performs will determine which installers need to be run on the server in order to update the software.

Server Classification

Primary server

The primary server can be either a VOD Server, VIO, or Standalone VIOCG. The primary server runs the web interface that allows you to administer Cablecast and Carousel. There is only ONE primary server in an entire Cablecast system, and it is the one that you connect to and Login to FrontDoor. If your system has a VOD server, this will be the Primary. You can also look at Windows Programs and Features on your Cablecast Server. If you see FrontDoor listed, this is another method of verifying it is the Primary.

The primary server needs both Cablecast Web Interface and Control Modules selected when running the Cablecast Installer.

Cablecast Servers (VIO, VIO CG, and Live Streaming Servers)

All Cablecast servers that are NOT the primary server fall into this class. There can be many of these servers depending on the size of your system. These servers will need Cablecast Control Modules selected when running the Cablecast installer.

Finding all of your servers

A list of all the servers in a system can be found using the Cablecast and Carousel interfaces. To find the primary server and all the cablecast servers log into Cablecast and navigate to Main Menu -> Settings -> System Settings -> Servers.

This screen will list all the servers that need Cablecast installed. One of these systems, usually a VOD or VIO Server is the primary server and will also need the "Cablecast Web Interface" option selected (if not automatically detected).

Downloading and Running the Installer.

There is a single installer with two options needed to update your cablecast system.

Cablecast_Installer_X.X.X.X.exe

Cablecast 7+ will download the installer to your host unit, and then copy the installer to each Cablecast server in your system.

The installer can be found in C:\TRMS\Cablecast Installers on each Cablecast server.

Starting Your System Installation

The heading is a little misleading because first we are going to talk about what to do right before starting the installation.

Running the installers will stop all automation on your system during installation!

Because of this you are going to want to make sure that the channel(s) is/are on a live source (like a satellite feed) and that your channel output is overridden so it doesn’t attempt to switch during this time.

Your installation will need to start on your primary server. Once you are ready, right-click the Cablecast installer and select “Run as administrator.” Once it opens you will see this installation wizard.

Since this is your primary/Host server you will see both "Cablecast Control Modules" and "Cablecast Web Interface" listed on the "The components below will be installed." screen. If you are on your primary/Host server and only see Cablecast Control Modules, please contact support at support@Cablecast.tv.

Running the installer on any server other than your primary/Host server will only list "Cablecast Control Modules". If you are on any server that is not your primary/Host server and you see "Cablecast Web Interface" listed please contact support at support@Cablecast.tv.

If you want to enable network video playback across multiple video playback servers, make sure to run the installer with the Windows administrator credentials on your playback server( by clicking "Advanced" on the first prompt. More about this in this article: How do I setup Network Share for CablecastVideoServerCM Control Module

Once your primary server is completely updated you will want to update the rest of your system.

After you’ve finished all of the installations, you are going to want to go back to the servers page from the “Finding all of your servers” step to confirm that all servers are on the correct version of Cablecast.

Confirming the System is Operational

In order to confirm a successful update navigate to Main Menu -> Settings -> System Settings -> Servers in Cablecast and confirm that all connection checks are OK.

Finally go to Main Menu -> Autopilot -> Send Autopilot and do an autopilot send. If the send is successful your system upgrade is complete.

If you have any trouble during the update, please contact support@Cablecast.tv for assistance.
