Using Cablecast for all aspects to scheduling a channel?

    Hey Grant! 

    Back when i worked at Concord TV in New Hampshire, I did excactly that. I had my whole timetable figured out in a Google Spreadsheet, and I would use that to plan out my days. However, new in Cablecast 6.6, you can now do automated scheduling slots in your scheduling interface, taking a lot of the work of having a spreadsheet.

    If you're running 6.6, you'll see in the Tools section a new tab, "Auto Schedule".

    This allows you to automatically have Cablecast pull the latest episode of a series of shows (Like a City Council meeting, or a latest episode of a public produced show) and automatically schedule it into assigned time slots. It'll save you a ton of time.

    In my experience, different channels may require different ways of scheduling and for me it depends upon the channel and the particular way it is scheduled. And of course there's a whole lot of personal preference mixed in as well.  :-)

    I still do a spreadsheet for two of our channels that are programmed 24/7 and contain a mix of series and non-series programming. It cannot all be auto-scheduled so I find it useful to have a visual plan to make sure I have accounted for all of the new non-series programs for the week. I also build parts of my spreadsheets months in advance so I can account for any special programming that I know will be coming. Our staff and public access channels are examples of this kind of scheduling.

    Other channels are easier for me to maintain without such a detailed spreadsheet and I just use a general calendar and documentation to remind me of the details I need to accomplish the scheduling of those channels. Our government access channels are an example of this kind of scheduling. I cannot really plan ahead beyond the meetings as I don't know how long they will be and therefore what will fit in-between the meeting playbacks. The empty spaces I can only fill as I go, and I just choose from a list of additional programs approved for that channel. I simply mark my calendar if a meeting is cancelled. In addition to the calendar I have two reference sheets that detail the meeting recording information and the playback start times. I utilize the schedule "blocks" function to program the rest of the playbacks in a semi-automatic way.

    With nine actively programmed channels and each one with its own unique schedule, I find some kind of a visual reference very useful and necessary for my work flow. Hope that helps!
