CablecastCG is the new bulletin board that comes with Cablecast 7 and your VIO server. With Cablecast CG you have the ability to create bulletins that will show between programing as your default source. Dynamic Bulletins are a nice way to have regularly updated content from a variety of different sources without having to do a lot of work.
Navigating to CablecastCG
To navigate to CablecastCG you will click the CablecastCG menu option on the left hand side.
When you are at the CablecastCG main menu, the first thing you are going to want to do is make sure you are in the correct zone that you want to work in. To learn more, check out our article about CablecastCG Zone Navigation.
Now that you are in the correct zone, you will see four options to choose from. We are going to select the New Bulletin option.
Creating a Dynamic Bulletin
You have three different types of bulletins that you can create; Template, Uploaded, and Dynamic. We will go over the other two types of bulletins in other articles.
Dynamic bulletins are unique bulletins that you create within the CablecastCG user interface, but you point them to an outside source. Once pointed to that source these bulletins will update automatically with new dynamic content. Keeping your bulletins fresh without having to do much.
In this article we will go over using Social Media in Dynamic Bulletins. CablecastCG only directly integrates with Twitter, but there are work arounds that customers have done to create great Dynamic Bulletins for platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.
CablecastCG directly integrates with Twitter, but there are some steps that you will need to do before you are creating bulletins. CablecastCG requires that you authenticate with a Twitter account before it can do anything. You can use your organizations account, your personal account, or you can create an account just to use for authenticating. The authentication allows CablecastCG to be able to access Twitter to search and pull content to display in bulletins.
To authenticate a Twitter account, first go to settings and then CablecastCG settings.
Then select System.
In the System menu, Choose External Authentication. Once there, click on New Authentication.
Click on the Drop Down menu for Type and select Twitter. Then click the big Link Twitter Account button.
A new page will open asking you to authorize access to your Twitter account. Type in your Username and Password and then click Authorize App.
Once you authorize, you will be taken back to the External Authentication page and it will display that you now have an authenticated Twitter account to use.
You can now go to the Dynamic Bulletins and Select the Twitter Bulletin. You will see that the bulletin is now using the account that you set up for authentication.
In the Dynamic tab you well set the criteria of what you would like to pull from Twitter and how much. When you are authenticating with an account, you are not just limiting only seeign tweets and content from that specific account. The authentication gives you access to search Twitter for what you would like to show. You can search for Twitter Usernames, Hashtags, or keywords. One thing to note with searching by Username if you use the @Username how Twitter works, this will show all of the tweets they create, all the tweets that people reply to and all the tweets that mention that user. In some settings that might not be good as you don't want to show peoples angry mean tweets on your Bulletin Board. So instead search using from:Username and this will only show tweets that user created.
Next you are able to set how many tweets you would like to show. In the Limit By section you can choose by Total Items or Total Bulletins. I recommend Total Items. This will tell the software I only want to see this specific number of the most recent tweets. Keep that number a little lower to between 2-5 items.
Next you can set your Item Display Options. This give you the ability to set Character Limits, Item Spacing, and also includes your Excluded Words section. The Excluded Words section will allow you to add specific keywords or phrases that you don't want to appear in your bulletins. If that word or phrase is one of the Tweets, CablecastCG will skip over that Tweet entirely. This is a great way to ensure your favorite four letter words don't end up on your channel.
In the Content Tab you are able to set what specifically you want to pull from a Tweet to display in your bulletin. Most customers use the preset Dynamic Fields that are being used in the template. But if you want to customize this you can see all the options by opening the Dynamic Fields List at the bottom.
For Scheduling your Twitter bulletin, you can leave it set to always active. Just like the other Dynamic Bulletins in CablecastCG, your Twitter Bulletin will update automatically when ever there is a new tweet. So you only have to create these one and they will continually show fresh new content without having to do much work.
Cablecast CG does not directly integrate with Facebook like how we do with Twitter. But the nice thing with Dynamic Bulletins is that there is a lot of different ways to receive that data to show in your bulletin board. RSS is a very powerful way to receive information and process it in Cablecast CG. Our Friends at Carousel Digital Signage created a step by step guide on how to create an RSS feed by using the third party site Zapier. With this, they were able to create the RSS feed and use the RSS Bulletin to display their Facebook content. Here is the link to that article on the process of using Zapier.
This process by using Zapier can also be utilized by other Social Media platforms such as Instagram. The possibilities are out there and RSS is very popular.
