What version of Windows will we upgrade to?
Windows 10 2019 LTSC. LTSC stands for long term servicing branch and is used for appliances. Most notably it does not automatically upgrade to new Windows feature releases, has no windows store, enables more control over windows updates and reserves guaranteed security releases for 10 years (2029).
Who is eligible?
Any Cablecast customer with hardware purchased after January 1, 2014 (build codes 1026 and greater) that are running either Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
What is the procedure?
First you will need to upgrade to Cablecast 6.6.1 (or greater) which includes the Cablecast archive tool. The Cablecast archive backs up all system configuration and metadata files stored on the OS drive to the servers content drive.
Because we purchase OS licensing on a "as needed" basis from Microsoft, licensing from Microsoft can take up to 3 weeks. After we get the licensing, we include it in the package that contains the USB installation media. Then you will use the USB key that we send you to upgrade your system to Windows 10. Lastly, you will run the restore tool to load your settings and content back onto your system.
Using the licensing sticker we included in the package, you'll then activate windows and put the new license sticker on the chassis.
What is the cost to upgrade?
The upgrade cost is dependent on when you purchased your servers, and whether or not you have hardware and software assurance. The following is a schedule of Windows 10 upgrade costs:
- Systems purchased present through January 1, 2014: Must have active software assurance including
- Hardware assurance on each applicable system OR $300 per machine (licensing) to upgrade OS.
For servers purchased prior to January 1, 2014, there is no upgrade option. Please discuss replacement options with your broadcast dealer or regional sales representative.
Because these are OEM systems and versions of Windows 10, user-provided licensing is not an option for upgrades.
Email email@example.com and mention you're looking to upgrade your system OS to Windows 10. If anything is needed to continue with the upgrade, you'll be handed off to sales, otherwise, the procedure for upgrade will begin.
What is the target date to start Upgrades?
November 12, 2019. We expect to begin scheduling Windows updates and releasing Cablecast 7.1 mid February.
Ineligible dedicated signage hardware
Any hardware assets being used for dedicated Digital Signage (Non-broadcast use) cannot be upgraded via our upgrade procedure, this includes:
- Carousel 250
- Carousel 260
If you have units and are unsure if they're covered by the upgrade or not, email firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll help you determine if they can be upgraded.
Upgrade Turnaround Time
From the time that we can confirm system eligibility and start with the upgrade, getting the USB installation media and Windows 10 licensing can take up to 3 weeks. Upgrading is about 2 hours per system.
